4 Easy Steps That Will Help You Meet Your Invisalign Wear Time

Although Invisalign is considerably more convenient than traditional braces, it’s normal for there to be a bit of a learning curve. So, if you’re having trouble meeting your Invisalign wear time right away – don’t worry! Instead, read on to learn four helpful steps you can take to ensure you wear them for 20+ hours each day.

4 Ways to Ensure You Wear Your Aligners for 20+ Hours

Creating a routine that you can be consistent with is important. In the process of creating yours, keep the following in mind:

Only remove your trays when it’s necessary

Since the aligners are removable, some patients develop bad habits, like taking them out when their teeth are sore. However, you should only take them out when absolutely necessary, like before eating. (Note: If your teeth feel sore after transitioning to a new set of aligners, consider making the transition at night so you can sleep through the initial adjustment phase!).

Use the stopwatch on your phone

It’s important to track your aligner-free time, especially at the beginning of your orthodontic treatment when you’re still finding a routine that works. There is also a timer on the Invisalign app, so you can use that if it’s more convenient for you. Either way, make sure you track when you take your aligners out and, if necessary, set a reminder so you don’t forget to put them back on!

Multi-task where you can

With only a few hours of aligner-free time each day, it’s important to multi-task when you can. For example, drink your coffee alongside your breakfast instead of separately. You can also soak your aligners in a dentist-recommended cleaner while you’re eating dinner instead of while you’re scrolling through your phone in bed.

Brush your teeth right away

Whether you just finished your breakfast or your final meal of the day, it’s important that you brush your teeth right away. That way, you can put your aligners back on ASAP! Remember to brush for a full two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. It’s also important that you clean your aligners and rinse them thoroughly with clean, cool water before putting them back on.

Why Wearing Your Aligners Consistently Is Important

There’s no denying that meeting the 20+ hour-a-day wear time will take some time and effort. That said, it’s well worth it! Patients who consistently don’t meet this goal often fall off-track with their treatment plans, requiring them to invest more time and money. Conversely, patients who consistently wear their aligners for the large majority of the day usually see results faster and complete the teeth-straightening process on time.
