NEW TREATMENT FOR GUM DISEASE?

f gum disease is allowed to occur and progress from its mildest form (“gingivitis”) to its most severe form (“periodontitis”), it will lead to inflammation, bleeding, and even tooth loss (by destroying the bone that supports the teeth). Of course, the best way to avoid tooth loss associated with gum disease is to floss and brush regularly and schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings. Once periodontitis takes hold, only professional treatment (scaling, root planing, and antibiotics) can eliminate it. However, promising new research has identified a gene (Del-1) that can prevent periodontal bone loss by inhibiting the activity of “osteoclasts,” cells that absorb bone tissue. Subsequent research is likely to lead to new treatments for periodontitis and other bone-damaging diseases.
