Many patients are curious how they can get through their clear aligner treatment as quickly as possible. The answer is simple: follow all of the guidelines your dentist gives you! In other words, even after the excitement of life with braces begins to fade, implement the Invisalign do’s and don’ts into your daily routine so you don’t fall off-track with your treatment plan. If you’re not entirely sure where to start, read on!
DO Wear Your Aligners for 22 Hours a Day
Being able to remove your aligners comes with several perks, including no dietary restrictions. It also means that you need to make a conscious effort to wear them for 20-22 hours a day. If you don’t, then your teeth won’t track properly, resulting in delays.
DON’T Switch Your Trays Too Early
A common misconception that patients have is that they can move onto the next aligner in the series a bit early in order to speed up their treatment timeline. The reality is that doing so can actually add weeks or months onto the backend. So, don’t try to rush the process!
DO Clean Your Aligners After Each Meal
The last thing you want is for your aligners to take on a yellow, dull look. That’s why it’s important to consistently clean them after each meal. Fortunately, you only need two things to do so: a soft-bristled toothbrush and some clean water.
DON’T Use Hot Water with Your Trays
Before you clean your aligners, check the temperature of the water! If it’s too hot, then the plastic can warp, rendering your trays virtually useless. To prevent that from happening, stick to cool or room-temperature water.
DO Prioritize Your Check-In Visits
Remember, each check-in visit with your orthodontist is important. In addition to scanning your teeth to make sure they are tracking properly, your dental team uses these appointments to make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan, answer questions, and provide you with your next batch of aligners.
DON’T Wrap Your Trays in a Napkin
When it does come time to take your aligners out, do not wrap them in a napkin or leave them out on the counter or table. Not only does this increase the likelihood of them being damaged, but it also increases the likelihood that they will be misplaced. Instead, store them in their designated case.
