Dangers of Cigar Smoking

While tobacco products pose a known risk for oral cancer and other types of cancer and disease, cigars are often regarded as being safer than cigarettes. After all, cigarettes are packaged with a warning label while cigars are more ceremoniously wrapped, packaged, and smoked. However, the National Institutes of Health reveals that a cigar emits as much as 90 times the level of nitrosamines (potent cancer-causing compounds) that a cigarette does. A single premium cigar can also hold as much tobacco as an entire pack of cigarettes. So even if a cigar smoker takes an occasional puff and does not inhale, he or she is still bathing his or her mouth and throat in at least 60 cancer-causing compounds.

The best way to ensure better health is to give up any kind of smoking. For quality, compassionate dental care, please call 508.867.2777 to schedule an appointment. At West Brookfield Dental, located at 9 West Main St., West Brookfield, we are proud of our staff – a staff dedicated to helping you look and feel better. P.S. According to the National Institutes of Health, smoking one to two cigars daily doubles the risk of cancer of the lips, tongue, mouth, throat, and esophagus. Smoking more than two daily increases the risk dramatically.
