4 Tips for Enjoying Summer with Braces

Summer is here – bring on days by the pool, delicious barbeques, and beautiful picnics! If this is your first summer with braces, then you’ll be happy to know your orthodontic treatment won’t get in the way of your fun in the sun. To ensure you can thoroughly enjoy all this beautiful season has to offer, keep reading for a few must-know tips for staying on track with your treatment plan.

#1. Know What You Can & Can’t Eat
The last thing you want is for your relaxing morning by the pool to turn into an emergency trip to your dentist’s office. To prevent that from happening, it is important to avoid foods that can potentially break or damage your braces, like crunchy apples and corn on the cob. Don’t worry though – there are plenty of summer classics that you can enjoy, such as pasta salad, mashed potatoes, and soft fruit!
#2. Stick to a Schedule
Summertime may come with a more relaxed schedule, but that doesn’t mean you should ease up on your oral hygiene routine. Whether you are traveling abroad or staying at home, it is of the utmost importance that you continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily, and use mouthwash regularly. If you have yet to schedule your bi-yearly dental checkup and cleaning, then now is a good time to give your dental team a call!
#3. Protect Your Mouth
All it takes is one rogue volleyball or one accidental elbow to your jaw during a pickup game of football to cause a loose bracket or broken wire. That’s why it is so important to wear a mouthguard, during both contact and non-contact sports alike. You should also wear SPF daily (even on your lips) to avoid prolonged, unprotected exposure to the sun, which can increase your risk of being diagnosed with oral cancer.
#4. Limit Sugary Treats
From ice-cold soda to creamy ice cream, summer is filled with treats that are high in sugar. Unfortunately, this can result in fall cavities, which will quickly derail your treatment timeline. To prevent that from happening, make sure to be mindful of your sugar consumption and opt for healthier alternatives instead.
Fortunately, staying on track with your treatment plan during the summer isn’t a difficult task. With the above tips in mind, you can enjoy all this beautiful season has to offer while getting closer and closer to your dream smile!
