Tooth Sensitivity can be triggered by hot or cold foods and liquids or merely by breathing in cold air. The sudden, sharp pain associated with these activities is due to the involvement of nerve endings in one or more teeth. Sometimes, receding gums expose the soft “dentin” layer, which is below the enamel and encapsulates the tooth nerve. Dentin, which makes up the tooth root(s) and also accounts for the bulk of the tooth, contains tiny channels that lead to the tooth nerve center (pulp). Once the dentin comes in contact with hot or cold foods and liquids, it triggers sensation in the nerve. Other causes of tooth sensitivity include cracked or chipped teeth, decay, and acidic foods and juices.
