Patients derive many health benefits from regular checkups with the dentist, and researchers have recently uncovered another. First, it is instructive to point out that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in this country. The most common form of heart disease is “coronary artery disease” (CAD), which is caused by buildups of plaque in the coronary artery that reduce blood flow to the heart. Common risk factors for heart disease include physical inactivity, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes. Now, researchers have also found a link between a dental root infection known as “apical periodontitis” and blocked coronary arteries. The condition is mostly detected with dental x-rays.
